Frequently Asked Questions
What is physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy aims to reduce the symptoms associated with injury or illness. Also, to decrease the likelihood of future injury too.
Physiotherapist treatment will cover a range of different services depending on the type of issue being experienced. For example, a programme focused on bones, joints and soft tissues may be needed for those with back, neck or shoulder pain or a sports injury.
Where a person has movement issues due to a stroke, Parkinson’s or another condition, the physio will focus on their nervous system.
And some programmes will focus on rehabilitation, for example where a person has experienced a heart attack.

What is the difference between a physiotherapist and a chiropractor?
A physiotherapist will look at how the entire body is functioning, offering a tailored programme to meet the needs of their client and reduce pain while increasing mobility.
This is different from a chiropractor, who mainly focuses on the alignment of bones and joints as well as specific musculoskeletal problems.
At Belgravia, we pride ourselves on offering a wide range of physiotherapy services. This means you can be confident we can support you even if you are experiencing more than one issue simultaneously.
Each programme is tailored to the client, so you will always be receiving unique care in your own home, focused around your needs.
Great team and service. The physio is a wealth of knowledge and tackles the issues one by one. After five sessions, the pain is gone and I now understand how to prevent the reoccurrence of it. She is also always right on time at my home.

Pain and symptom alleviation
Dry needling
Dry needling is used to manage movement issues and neuromusculoskeletal pain. It stimulates neural, muscular and connective tissues and can also be known as trigger point dry needling or intramuscular stimulation.
It is different to acupuncture which is focused around stimulating energy through the body. Instead, dry needling targets a specific area of concern or trigger point.
Electrotherapeutic modalities
By using low level electrical currents, we can safely alleviate pain and reduce swelling. Belgravia Healthcare offers a range of treatments including interferential therapy, ultrasound therapy, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, and neuro-muscular electrical stimulation.
If you would like to know more about which may be appropriate to manage your pain and swelling, do get in touch with our customer care experts.
Lymphatic drainage
This technique helps stimulate the lymph vessels in a swollen joint. The lymphatic system can be blocked by an injury or health condition. So by ‘draining’ the area we promote the eradication of any waste and toxins which have gathered in the joint.
Manual therapies
Sustained stretching and muscle energy techniques are used during manual therapy to treat the patient’s symptoms. There are two main passive movements we apply – which can either focus on mobilisation or manipulation (the latter is where the joint is moved beyond its current active range).
Neuromuscular therapy
This technique relieves pain through pressure on specific points, which helps adjust the nerve impulses going to the brain, ultimately leading to a reduction in symptoms.
This therapy has been shown to be helpful in lower or upper back pain treatment, and for people with sciatica, carpal tunnel, tendonitis, and many other symptoms.
Paediatric physiotherapy
With children’s bones and muscles still growing and developing, it is vitally important that any paediatric physiotherapy is undertaken by a trained professional. They can adapt exercises and treatments to ensure they are safe and beneficial for paediatric clients.
Pain management
By improving your mobility and strength and sharing our expert advice on the types of movement you should be undertaking, we can help to manage the pain associated with a chronic illness or long-term health condition.
Through a combination of techniques, we build up a programme which helps to manage your pain and reach any other goals you have surrounding mobility, independence, and activity levels.
Pre- and post-natal physiotherapy
There are a number of conditions which can be triggered or worsened during pregnancy and the post-partum period.
Having a physiotherapist who is specifically trained in working with pregnant and post-partum women means peace of mind that you are in the best of hands. We will prepare a specific pre/post-natal programme to alleviate your symptoms, and then begin working with you again six to eight weeks after the birth of your baby.
Common symptoms that can be alleviated during and after pregnancy are: back pain, sciatica, pelvic floor weakness, urinary incontinence etc.
Balance and posture
Balance and proprioception training
Proprioception is the way in which we determine the movement, location and actions of each part of our body.
By working on balance and proprioception during your physiotherapy appointment, there are a wide range of benefits for people including elders, athletes and those playing sports in their spare time, and those with conditions which may make balance and movement more difficult.
Gait aid prescription, exercise equipment and braces
Searching for exercise equipment, gait aids and braces can be overwhelming. That is why we provide training on using this equipment as well as advising which options may be best for your specific circumstances.
Patient education and home exercise plans
As well as working through exercises, training and the reasons behind them during our sessions – we want you to be able to continue feeling and living well when we are not there too. This is why we focus on sharing home exercise plans and educating you about your condition and symptoms.
Postural/ergonomic advice and correction techniques
Incorrect posture can give rise to a range of aches and pains, especially if there is an underlying health condition which may be affecting you. Simply by teaching you the correct way in which to hold yourself when sitting, standing and moving, we can alleviate the pains you’re feeling.
Mobility and strength
Flexibility training
Working together, we can address any muscle weaknesses and work on muscle groups to enhance their strength. We can also increase the extension capabilities of those muscles too.
Not only is this helpful for particular areas of concern, flexibility training can also assist athletes and those who undertake sport or exercise as hobbies.
Functional mobility training
Functional mobility training looks at how the body is being moved as a whole. By going through sets of exercises, and advising you on the best posture and ways of moving, we can correct issues. This can allow you to move through life more smoothly and easily.
This is also a fantastic way for sportspeople to become more adept at their chosen activities by enhancing the pace and range of their movements.
Kinesiotaping
Taping helps lift the skin which allows for lymphatic drainage. This helps reduce areas of pain and allows for faster recovery from injury.
It is especially effective for athletes or people undertaking sports to enable them to continue training safely.
It also provides support for muscular skeletal injuries and helps to reduce further injuries and pain.
Peripheral joint mobilisation and manipulation
Where the range of movement in a joint has been reduced, it is important to apply mobilisation and manipulation techniques to work towards an increase movement range.
This can improve quality of life by giving you the chance to maximise your exercise and mobility levels. It can also improve movement range which alleviates pain associated with the joint.
Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation
Through a tailored range of stretching techniques, we can help improve muscle elasticity. This assists with the range of movement that can be made both actively (during exercise) and passively.
Strength and endurance training
Strength focuses on the load that a joint can bear for a short time, while endurance focuses on bearing a much lighter load for a longer time.
It is important when we work with clients to ensure that both their strength and endurance are improved, especially where an injury has been experienced or a medical condition has impacted one or more joints.
Therapeutic exercises
Everyone wants to ensure their body is in the best condition possible, allowing them to move more freely, minimising any areas of pain or swelling, and maximising their wellbeing.
Physiotherapy is a key tool in helping promote health and wellbeing for all clients, with therapeutic exercises being specifically designed to have the best outcome – head to toe.
Rehabilitation and elder care
Bed mobility, transfers and ambulation
Whether recovering from an illness or injury or experiencing reduced mobility due to a health condition or the ageing process, ensuring you and those helping you to mobilise know exactly what they are doing is essential.
Our physio team work with you and your caregivers to ensure you are safe and comfortable. Also that you’re being moved in the most efficient way which eradicates risk of harm to you or those assisting you.
Breast cancer rehabilitation
Our therapy manager is specially trained in breast cancer rehabilitation and can work with you throughout and after your treatment.
Undertaking physiotherapy can help reduce fatigue, weakness and pain, as well as swelling which can be caused by some treatments (lymphedema).
Cardiac rehabilitation and pulmonary rehabilitation
You may have experienced a traumatic episode such as a heart attack, undergone surgery, or have a condition such as heart disease or COPD. If so, Belgravia can work with you to maximise the efficiency of the affected muscles and organs.
This can aid recovery and minimise the long-term effects upon your quality of life.
Falls prevention
We work with elder people on their balance and co-ordination, tailoring the programme around their existing movement capabilities and any health conditions they may be experiencing. This helps to reduce the likelihood of falls occurring.
This is especially beneficial considering elder people are more likely to be injured by a fall due to increased bone fragility which occurs as we age.
Spinal treatment
We have a range of options when it comes to helping with spinal issues. These include manual therapy, neural tissue mobilisation, trigger point therapy, spinal mobilisation and manipulation.
When you get in touch with us, we will assess your specific needs and develop a specialised programme to address your aims and improve your condition.
I had an amazing experience with the physiotherapist Ms Dhara for my spinal issue. The entire process of booking an appointment to receiving treatment was seamless, I’ve booked five more sessions as I felt relief from pain after the initial visit and it’s so convenient to get it done at home.
Thank you to the team for a smooth service.

Spent a year not being able to sit and then stand without pain in my knee (scooter injury). Have had two sessions of physio with Dhara – and I find myself in significantly less pain. ‘Activated/reawakened’ muscles I think my brain had forgotten existed. Can’t express my relief and gratitude. Look forward to every session.
